Vaisakhi Hi-Tea with the PM
A very special 'thank you' goes out to all those who nagged me to glory for not updating this blog. I should set-up a DP Fan Club lah. You people make me feel so loved! :) Hahahaha! Yes, I'm well aware that it's been two over weeks since that last post. But what to do?!

The month of April has indeed been a rollercoaster ride. First the Vaisakhi celebrations. Then my exams. Now I'm working on the MSc research presentation, which is scheduled to take place in a couple more days. In the midst of all that, HEAPS of things have been happening along the sidelines. Also, I've been scouting for a full-time lecturing position. Quite a number of opportunities lurking here & there; I'll blog about this real soon.

By mid of the coming week, I will be done with my 3rd semester at UPM. The final semester commences sometime mid of June. I've got heaps planned for the month of May; securing full-time employment, reviving DePiction, supervising my Stamford students in their public relations campaign project, resuming my family documentary research, etc. *sigh* hope I'm able to see it all through.

Okay lah, I better get back to work. I shall leave you with a partial selection of photos that were taken during the recent Vaisakhi Hi-Tea function with the PM. It was held on the 14th of April at Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel and attended by some 2000 odd people.

As part of the organizing committee, I was assigned to handle the media relations aspect of the event and of course, the usual photographer's duty. Here's a compilation of media coverage that we & the Sikh community garnered throughout the month of April. Enjoy.

  • The VVIP table setting (PM's seat).
  • Tan Sri Musa Hitam (former DPM) chatting with event organizers and hotel
    staff at the entrance of the hotel, while awaiting the arrival of PM.
  • PM arrives at 4.40pm and is greeted by Harcharan Singh, a renown figure in
    the Sikh community (member of MGC & Interfaith)

  • PM is escorted to the holding room by MGC officials.
  • At the holding room, the VVIP's sharing a light moment while the PM takes a
    break to freshen up! Was the only photographer permitted inside, while the
    press shutterbugs waited outside... in disappointment! :)
  • PM making his way to the Grand Ballroom.

  • An airshot of the PM walkings towards the ballroom foyer, ascorted by MGC
    officials, hotel personnel and his security agents.
  • PM checks his pocket while Ruby get's ready to pin the VVIP corsage.
  • PM thanks Ruby after a long but successful attempt at pinning the corsage,
    without physically harming him! :)

  • After the long walk and meeting the 'rakyat', PM finally gets to sit.
  • The opening performance by Malaysian Sikh Bagpipers - Sri Dasmesh.
  • Emcee of the day, RTM's veteran newscaster, Harjit Singh Hullon.

  • Keynote address by Jagir Singh, MGC's President.
  • A candid of PM & former DPM reading the souvenir book

  • Speech by PM, emphasizing on racial harmony and the 9MP
  • The event's signature shot - PM launching Vaisakhi 2006 by playing the
    dhol, a punjabi cultural music instrument. He is accompanied by MGC's
    president and the infamous Sir Malkith Singh (in blue batik).
  • Dhol performance by Malaysian Dhol Federation, led by dhol maestro
    Keeran and accompanied by other dholies.

  • Representatives from the Buddhist Maha Vihara, Malaysia.
  • Hardev Kaur, Malaysia's Lata Mangeshkar rendering one of PM's
    favourite hindi oldie.
  • PM is seemingly pleased by Hardev Kaur's gesture.

  • Bird's-eye of the ballroom
  • PM's attention is diverted (by this cute & drowsy baby) as he makes
    his way out of the ballroom.

  • PM thanking and bidding farewell to the event organizers.
  • Former DPM congratulating the event organizers for staging a superb
    Vaisakhi celebration event.
  • The Vaisakhi Hi-Tea Organizing Committee & helpers posing for
    a group shot. The event would not have been possible without these
    individuals, led by the Legendary Malkith Singh! Kudos to all!
    WHY DO WE ALL LOOK FAT?! *wonders*

Please note that all photos have been compressed and resized for speedy uploading and viewing. As a result, the sharpness, colour and resolution had to be compromised. If you would like to have the entire collection of photos, buzz me and I'll provide you with the download link. It's a 35MB zip file, with 110 low-res shots.

Vaisakhi Day - 14th April 2006

Vaisakhi has special historical significance for Sikhs because on this day in 1699, the tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh Ji initiated the contemporary Sikh baptismal ceremony. This historical day marks the metamorphosis of the Sikhism into Khalsa Panth (Noble Nation) and re-definition of its role in the multi socio-religious and cultural society of India.

Click here if you wish to learn more on Vaisakhi.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not been able to post much lately due to my active involvement in the planning of "Vaisakhi Hi-Tea 2006 with our Prime Minister", which is scheduled at 4pm today at Sunway Lagoon Resort. I'm the official photographer and media relations coordinator of this event.
On Monday afternoon, I was shooting at Gurpuri Foundation. It was BAKTI's (Wives of Ministers & Deputy Ministers) 3rd trip to the home, headed by Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor - wife of DPM.
Photos of the above-mentioned functions will be uploaded in my next post.
On a different note, my MSc final exams are on Sunday! Under normal circumstances, I would've already been in 'panic-mode'. Surprisingly, I've been quite cool this semester. Weird.
MyKad reader on Astro Decoder!
Most of you would've probably read about the recent controversy regarding the wrong classification of one's religion in the new IC - MyKad.
Sadly, the government has not made any effort to address this concern and give our citizens clear directions on how to go about checking the status of our religion in MyKad.
If you wish to examine your MyKad but do not know how to go about it, fret no more! I just found out from Angela that you can do so in the comfort of your own home. Yes, thru your Astro decoder! Okay, here's how you do it:
  1. Switch on your TV & Astro decoder :)
  2. Go to channel 800 (it will take 10 seconds to load)
  3. Once the Astro Interactive menu comes on, scroll down and select the 'MyKad' option.
  4. Insert your MyKad in the second slot of your Astro decoder.
  5. Tadaa! Your MyKad details will appear on the TV screen.
Just conveniently pull out your card and insert the next one if you wish to check more MyKads. Pay careful attention to your personal details and if you detect an error, quickly head to the nearest registration department and get it rectified.
Please make this known to as many people as possible.
Crash Landing
Just remembered this weird yet funny incident that happened nearly 9 years ago (1997) when I was working part-time at MasterCall, a telemarketing agency in Kelana Jaya. Raj, a colleague of mine then (also my former schoolmate) accompanied me to Jaya area (Sec 14) to get some stuff. After doing whatever we went there for, we hopped back on my motorbike and cruised around the area for a bit.
While riding, suddenly from nowhere, a pigeon crashed into us! YEAH smack in between both of us ok! I nearly lost control of the bike! The stuck birdy kept flappin its wings nonstop; we had feathers all over the air. That lasted for a good 20 seconds until the birdy got back into her senses and flew off. Yes, all that happened while the bike was moving. Took us a few minutes to recover from shock.
Anyway, that evening I related the incident to my parents and some relatives during dinner. Then someone asked, "If you would've fallen off the bike, can claim insurance ah?"
Good question, I thought to myself but how to report the accident lar? How to say "Kena langgar burung?!". Damn embarassing man!
Real classic story.
Goodbye Bitch!
Met the fellowship gang over the weekend in Cheras (Vasakhi Grand Event 2006) and somehow, someone started the topic on my malware crisis. Mr.T and Hardy strongly recommended McAfee. I insisted my Avast was good but according to Mr.T, McAfee updates are the fastest compared to other virus-busters. Not wanting to challenge the word of our IT whiz, I made a pitstop at LowYatt Plaza on Tuesday afternoon and grabbed McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006.
I hate LowYatt cos you can never just buy what you want and then leave. Ended up picking 5 other installers! Then I bolted out before anything could lure me into spending more money. *sigh* kinda miss that place now :(
Got back and installed the package in a jiffy. There are four main elements to the Suite. The VirusScan anti-virus software and Personal Firewall Plus are security staples that no-one should be without. Also bundled into this package are the latest versions of Spamkiller for helping fight against junk email, and Privacy Service to try to ensure your personal details aren't broadcast on the internet. A very comprehensive suite indeed.
My tactical combat mission began instantly after installing this McAfee. I initially had some problems updating the program but managed to sort that out by messing around with the configuration. Ran a full-scan and it lasted for 15 mins. But well worth the time cos the Spyware Quake 2.0 bitch that had infected my baby is now dead and gone!
Though I had managed to bust the bitch by messing with the system registry, there were still little traces of the malware in my laptop. McAfee sniffed it out and in a flash my baby was back to normal.
The Verdict
McAfee's Internet Security Suite is the easiest route available to ensure that your PC is well protected from the net's worst threats. While other individual components are available free, it's the integration of everything into a single package that makes this worthwhile. If you don't want the bother of tracking down four or five individual programs and working to keep them all up to date, this suite is an excellent alternative.
This software is configured through SecurityCenter, a one-stop thingy where you can access information and controls for the entire software suite. The virus software has the might of McAfee's AVERT labs, based in California, working away to help stop new viruses before they become too widespread. With the firewall, there is little chance of anything coming through and infecting your PC. Likewise, the Privacy Service will work hard to make sure your personal details don't leave your computer, so you're safer from the latest internet threats such as phishing.
Phew, I am finally done! Now, is McAfee gonna pay me for kissing its ass?
Cracking Under Pressure
Two more stressful weeks and I will be temporarily liberated from this struggle.
Yes, 'temporarily' until the final semester starts in early June.
