Gloomy Eve
Fri, 29th Dec:

Uncle-M called around 10pm to inform mom that grandma's not doing too well. Dad & mom got ready in an instant and bolted to grandma's place in Setapak. I stayed back; did not want to unnecessarily overcrowd the apartment. All of mom's siblings from the Klang Valley were there too. Uncle-M's friend, Dr.P was there to examine grandma. He later suggested that grandma should be admitted for further tests. Slightly past midnight, grandma was tranfered to Tawakal Hospital KL by ambulance.

Sat, 30th Dec:

Ruby and I visited grandma at the ICU around 5pm. It was a very special moment. In her semi-conscious state, she could barely talk, move or even open her eyes; yet she 'blessed' us both and inquired on our well-being.

A widow for half of her life, an asthmatic and diabetic, grandma raised her family well and got all her children married single-handedly. She's known for her stern demeanour and can be likened to an iron-lady. Having endured unimaginable challenges in life, I could not believe my grandma was lying helplessly in bed. I tried to contain my sadness but tears kept dwelling in the eyes...

Around 6pm, Ruby and I left the hospital. We went to shop for office attire and later went for dinner. In the midst of dinner, dad called to inform that grandma's condition is critical. I dropped Ruby home and rushed back to KL. Luckily the roads were free from the regular KL traffic; reached the hospital at 11.20pm.

There was a big crowd outside the ICU. I didn't make it on time. I arrived 5 minutes late. Grandma was no more. Made my way through the crowd and found mom. She was devastated. Hugged and comforted her. Saw grandma lying peacefully in bed. Apparently, all those present witnessed grandma last's breath.

I contacted the press but it was too late to place an obituary ad. Furthermore, the funeral details had yet to be confirmed. We concluded that our family news network is far more effective than any print or electronic media :) so the ad was called off.

An hour later, the hospital released grandma's body and a hearse was on standby. It was decided that grandma will be taken to Uncle-I's place in Kepong. Dad, mom and other family members proceeded to Kepong. I returned home.

Sun, 31st Dec:

Headed to Kepong at 8am to perform our last respects. All electric crematoriums in the Klang Valley were fully booked. Our final resort was the traditional firewood crematorium at Loke Yew. About 1pm, grandma's casket was carried back into the hearse and selected family members went along to the crematorium. Grandma was cremated around 2.30pm. We returned to Kepong and joined the remaining family until evening.

Officially Engaged
The engagement was on the 9th of December, the same day I was born some years ago. Believe me, it was a coincidence. Our photographer from SmokeScreen captured over 800 shots that night; every moment was priceless.

Surprise Birthday Prezzies
December has been super-duper eventful thus far. If I was an efficient blogger, there would've been an entry for every activity/occasion. Too bad, can't do that but I shall try to recapitulate the first thing that happened earlier this month.

A week before my birthday, Ruby-dooby did the most expected thing ever. It was a Friday and we attended my company annual dinner at Shogun, 1U. I barely slept the night before (can't remember what kept me awake). After dinner, we were one of the first ones to leave, as I couldn't bear the exhaustion.

When I got home, dad & mom were out so I headed upstairs directly. Dumped my stuff in the room, stripped and headed to the bathroom. A hot shower was what I needed before nestling in bed. When I stepped into the bathroom, I found this on the basin...

I was too exhausted to even open the box. I even thought the flower was artificial. For some reason, I thought dad had dug up some old stuff and accidentally left it in my bathroom. Like duh, why would he do that? Nevermind. The hot shower was good and it somewhat got me back into my senses.

Oh... again, I didn't think of checking out what was in the box and went back to my room. When I opened the wardrobe, I found this on the center shelf...

Believe it or not, I just grabbed my change and closed the wardrobe without an ounce of curiosity. I mean, anyone in the right frame of mind would inspect all these unusual stuff around the house. I was bloody knackered to even think of doing that.

Just as I was about to jump into bed, I noticed yet another 'something' on my pillow. It was then that my eyes opened wide and mind got activated. "What the...?"

I bolted to the bathroom and brought in the stuff. Opened the wardrobe and did the same. Grabbed the ones on the bed too and placed it all on my study table.

Opened the teddy box and found Hershey's Kisses scattered with over 50 handwritten notes. Each note had a different message, expressing herself so well. I immediately popped a heyshey in my mouth! Yum... utter sweetness! The gesture and the chocolate :)

I then unwrapped the stuff that was placed in the wardrobe - Kaufmann leather wallet! Yes, very timely. My old wallet was already brittle. Lastly, I opened the stuff that was placed on the bed. Woohoo... Mont Blanc Presence Cool! Perfect scent.

I called Ruby-dooby at once. She was delighted to hear that it turned out to be more than just a surprise, thanks to the exhaustion. Apparently, Ruby teamed up with mother dearest and came over during office hours to strategically place the stuff all over the place. Ingenious.

This was all done a week before my birthday simply because it wouldn't have been possible to do it on the 9th itself. Yes, we got engaged on my birthday and will write about that in the upcoming postings.

Note to Sereena:
Babe, thanks so much! :) I heard all about what you gals did at 1U during lunch. Truly appreciate it.

Momento from China
It's 'presentation week' for my Cross-Cultural Studies class. Earlier this semester, each group was assigned to develop a print-media advertising campaign for Durex condoms; targeted to a country of their choice.

The assignment entailed conducting an intensive intercultural research (on their designated country) and developing a comprehensive advertising proposal. The presentation is a mock-pitch to the client.

Yesterday, one of the groups presented their work on China. As I stepped into the lecture room, it was dimly lit and I found pink flower petals on my table with a lovely tea set. Then came along one member of the group who served authentic Chinese tea to me. After the brief tea-tasting session, their presentation commenced.

Their proposal was rich in cross-cultural theories and concepts, which had been taught throughout the semester. The advertisements proposed were also based on the results of the Durex Global Sex Survey of 2005. Good effort, I'd say.

They concluded by giving me a heart-shaped souvenir from China... with a box of Durex condoms tied to it. Supercuteness :)

Yet Another Obsession
Okay, I have to confess - I'm addicted pretzels! Not just any kind, only Auntie Anne's pretzels! Some years ago, when I newly returned from Australia, my bro J introduced me to this thingy. Since then, Anne has been my favourite aunty :)

Trips to the mall are incomplete if I don't visit AA. Of all her pretzels, I'm obsessed with chocolate-mint! Oh Auntie Anne... why do you have to taste so good?! (I'm referring to her pretzels, you sicko!)

Sadly, Ruby can't seem to relate to my 'special' bond with this dear aunty of mine. Ruby thinks AA is up to no good. She's a little uncomfy by the fact that AA get's my undivided attention each time we go shopping. Plus, she thinks AA's gonna turn me into a short, fat, bald man in no time.

Now why would AA do that to me? I'm hurt and I feel like... eating more chocolate-mint pretzels! (in front of Ruby some more)

But there's one thing I gotta admit. Auntie Anne has definitely been...
