Valentine's Day is here again but I think it's just an over-rated day. Everyone knows that in recent times, Valentine's Day has become increasingly commercialized.
Looking at the V-Day promotions at hotels, jewelry stores, etc, the inane message that is being transmitted is - "your love is measured by what you do or buy". Utter rubbish, I'd say!
Call me a Valentine's Scrooge or whatever that pleases you, but this year I'm returning to the traditional card & flowers, which is far more significant than splurging on items that are half-the-price on normal days. Speaking of cards & flower, I just received an SMS from my ever faithful florist, Karin, informing that the lovely bouquet has been delivered. Any minute now, Ruby's gonna call...
(11.59am) --> waiting in anticipation
(12.00pm) --> phone's ringing :)
(12.03pm) --> just got off the phone; mission accomplished!
Valentine's 2008 Bouquet The Significance of V-Day to us...Exactly four years ago, our friendship unexpectedly bloomed into a relationship. And coincidently, it was on Valentine's Day. The story goes like this...
Ruby and I were good friends since the beginning of the millennium. We hung out regularly with our close circle of Fellowship Campers. As the years went by, the friendship only got better. I vividly recall the days when we used to chat for hours on the phone and online. It was absolutely platonic. And it all took place during precious office hours :)
The historic cubicle at Ruby's former workplaceThen came a point in 2004, when we were both 'momentarily' single and available. It was just a couple of days before V-Day and we were having a usual conversation thru MSN. Can't remember what we were talking about but eventually it led to this:
Ruby: So, what's the plan for Valentine's?Me:
Err, nothing? I'm single now, remember?Ruby: Hey, if you're single & I am single, will you be my Valentine???Me:
Huh?!! (dumbfounded) (blur-sotong)

Enough said. That conversation led to our first date on Valentine's Day in 2004. Did a real 'bollywood' thing at KL Lake Gardens :) It was a little awkward in the beginning (read: two good friends coming together) but weeks later, we knew what we had for each other was beyond friendship.
So, this one's for you, Ruby! Had you not initiated that, I wonder where we would have ended up today. Thank you and here's to many more Valentine's to come...
